Government acronyms are designed to confuse outsiders and make the rest of us feel like we’re in a secret club. The best way to survive is to make a cheat sheet, join agency Slack groups where people ask dumb questions anonymously, and memorize just enough to sound like you know what’s going on. Eventually, it’ll all click—until then, fake it till you make it.
The acronym overload is real. What helped me was keeping a small notebook with key terms and updating it as I learned new ones. I also found a mentor who broke things down for me without making me feel dumb. Don’t be afraid to ask, “Can you clarify what that means?”—even seasoned employees still mix up acronyms sometimes.
When I first started in government, I was overwhelmed too. I made a list of acronyms and key terms and kept it handy, plus I asked a couple of colleagues for a "crash course" when I felt stuck. Over time, it got easier. Don't be afraid to ask questions, everyone was new once!
Speak last ?
I had that too, and what I did was ask for their acronym list. When I got it, I realized that it was outdated so I volunteered to update it and make it more comprehensive, and then I made it available for the whole organization.
