Is the assignment directly related to one of their clients? Or like a fake strategy assignment?Unacceptable if it’s work directly for client. Also what is the agency?
Ask for compensation for the work. Don’t give them free work and respect yourself.
?? Confused by these responses. I don't think this is unreasonable? OP - yes, I would approach this like you would in your real job for a high profile project. Your effort will pay off. Even if you don't get this job, I'm willing to bet the exercise will be useful somehow in the near future. If timing is a concern, tell them you have a huge deadline at work and ask to have more days for their assignment. Good luck!
This is for a client which makes it rude. I am allowed to dictate timing within reason at least.
I was once asked to do something similar for a job. I was going to do it, then got really busy, ultimately did it on the flight to the interview. Opened my presentation of the assignment with that fact, got offered the job, ultimately turned it down when they lowballed me on salary.
Put in the amount of effort that roughly equates to how badly you want this job.
Twats. We made someone do it, because one person wasn't sure about the person. The head of digital strategy never even properly even looked at the assignment she gave.
But: to answer your question - ask those things. Or dictate them, you have a fucking day job. You can say, hey, I'll present back how I will approach something. But bringing proper thinking back: no.
Plain unacceptable. What is the name of this place.
If it is DDB: run. Away.
I appreciate it can seem a bit of a cheek but my agency does it and it really helps to demonstrate a strategist’s thinking. You have to be able to craft a good narrative. I’ve seen people have a great first interview then come in to present this type of assignment and be hopeless. Muddled thinking, bad presenting etc. If you want the job, do it and do it well. If you’re not that bothered about the job then both parties are probably better off.
Yes please at least share the holding company
Typical account sup response
I'm a senior strategist actually. My profile is incorrect and I can't change it. To clarify, I was assuming it was a fake assignment as well. Agree with all that it shouldn't be free work for a current client. Consultants interview with cases, creatives have portfolios, bankers take math tests...showcasing our abilities before getting a job is pretty common. I've had fake strategy assignments for interviews as well.
Yes test assignments unless it's for a client, which is what it sounded like initially. Giving real client assignments to outsiders is oftentimes simply illegal because of NDAs. It's almost like sending out RFPs just to collect ideas
