I'll start off by saying I love small-scale NFP orgs because they do what needs to be done to get shit done in our community!
But I'm really struggling with the fact that there's no support for my department outside of me. There are only 5 people on staff and we are, thankfully, unionised. Which means everyone's job description is quite set in stone and we can't be demanded to do anything outside of our description. But that also means when I'm told to run an event being hosted all weekend (I regularly work festivals and days-long events), there's no one else to help me besides the volunteers that I can pull in. If my volunteers flake (I have a list of 30 and maybe only 3-5 will even respond to my emails), I'm left manning the event for the entire time. It's incredibly exhausting and I can't even look to my colleagues to help me out because it's beyond their job description!! It's even worse if I fall ill because people would rather things get entirely cancelled then step up and help cover some hours.
I'm especially struggling with keeping my hours down because planning events takes hours and hours, then ATTENDING the events takes just as long. Yet there's still an expectation that I'll be in the office during set hours and attending meetings. In my peak season (summer), I'm regularly working 40-55 hours when I'm meant to be working 35.
I make $26.70/hour as an Outreach & Marketing Director. It's really starting to feel like it's not enough and I'd have an easier time moving to a for-profit org so I'd at least be part of a supportive team.
