Been itching to move overseas within the same company, just in a different city. The catch: each office runs pretty independently.

Would it be better to reach out directly to the ECDs or go through HR first?

Always avoid HR. They are your enemy. They will frame this a something problematic in a way or another.

They will find out, no doubt about it. Might as well get ahead of it. Just frame it as a new life experience you are going to do, but love the company and would like to stay with the org.

This is the way.

Avoid HR as much as possible.

HR is far more likely to say something to your current team.

What’s wrong with telling your ECD that your dream has been to live overseas and work. If they were a good leader and wanted what’s best for you, they would actually be supportive and maybe try and help.

There are some jerks out there and i’m sure you would know if your boss was one of them. But that is what I would do (and did many years ago and it was successful!)

Talk to your current ECD or CCO first. You’re going to need their support.

helpful

Well… I’ve heard some not-so-good stories about this in the past so I’m leaning towards not informing them. They’re also part of the reason why I want to leave.

And even if I do manage to talk to the ECDs in the other city, nothing’s guaranteed until there’s an actual offer or sponsorship. I don’t want to jump the gun too soon.

I’ve done this a lot. It’s not easy, but can be done. Ultimately it will be based on staffing need in the new office you wish to go to, AND the new office will have feel/defend that you can do the work better than a locally based person - because of hiring laws and because of the expense of hiring an expat. You are right to go to your ECD/CCO - because as others have pointed out, you will need their support. Be prepared to be patient.

Our industry needs to change the way it does recruiting. We make it impossible for people to apply directly to agencies. Relying on employee referrals gets good "culture fits" at the cost of diversity

How do I be a decent manager to a coworker who's upset I've been promoted twice in two years and they haven't? We started out as coworkers, became decent friends after a few good moments, but went back to simply coworkers after they flubbed a few projects and I had to step in to clean up. I'm non-confrontational but year-end reviews are right around the corner and I'm worried about having to act professional to someone who I got too close with and who now hates me.
