What Sped teachers wish Gen Ed teachers knew....

The federal law, IDEIA (2015) states that special education is a service and not a place. That means, we have NO sped students, sped teaches, or sped classes. We HAVE STUDENTS, CLASSES, AND TEACHERS. Once we remove the labels, or never identify a label to begin with, then we have created equity and equity provides opportunities for their future. Once we find a child eligible for services, then the expectations from teachers, family, and society decreases and we handicap our students (NLTS-2, 2011). I am not asking to support a reduction in services as all students need support. I am not supporting law suits. I am asking ALL practitioners to accept ALL students as STUDENTS!

Now that’s putting it in perspective!

like

Behavior is communication!
No student wants to feel out of control. If you’re struggling with a students emotions/behavior, that student is struggling more.
Kids want to know adults will keep them safe no matter the age.
Kids need and want limits but will fight against them if they’ve not experienced consistent limit setting at home.
Kids know if you don’t like them or are annoyed with them.
Kids want to belong, want to do well.

To have more patience, an open mind that not all students with special needs are the same, and be willing to learn other ways to reach those students.

You don't have the choice of whether or not to accommodate. If it is in the IEP, we are legally obligated to provide the accommodation.

Understand that sped kid's learn differently & college is not always an option.

like

It is an option, but not the ONLY option. Have students consider vocational schools or apprenticeship programs.

like

Wow, everything you said is spot on (Social worker 1)! Especially, that behavior is communication!! I have heard a lot teachers say that their behaviors are attention seeking and to just ignore it or replace it with a some sort of sensory manipulative. Instead they are communicating their untamed emotions and want to be heard or understood. I strongly believe that in order for a inclusive class to be really successful for all students is that Gen Ed teachers need to have some type of insight of experience working in a self contained classroom. I believe that way they can understand how all students function.

like

MHS1- that’s absolutely true!

like

IEP is needed if a student requires ‘specialized instruction’.

Nicely said CHS3. Thx

like

A student doesn’t have to have an IEP in order to receive accommodations and/or modifications.

like

If a student needs accommodations in order to be successful but doesn't qualify for an IEP, the school can write a 504 plan that will guarantee those accommodations.

Anyone else the last to be informed about ANYTHING at their site? I am only a second year SPED teacher and my eyes are already wide open to the fact that admin and Gen Ed teachers so often fail to inform me about important things regarding the grade levels I teach and other school events. Then I’m left scrambling to inform my students and parents of essential information, and I’m embarrassed! My aides also look at me like why don’t you know this? Aggravating.

IEP, 504, and those without internet will return in-person next week while rest of students remain remote. Regular Ed teachers may have students (mild Learning Disabled kiddos) in their room while teaching. They are saying it’s a liability issue if they have one student in the room with them, even though teaching other via Zoom. Thoughts? Anyone else experiencing this?

Hi SpEd Teachers, is anyone else facing EXTREME staff shortages as a result of state funding? We are not able to meet my students' IEP requirements (not even close) due to not enough paraprofessionals and the district flat out refusing to hire more. I've lost 70+ hrs/week of para hours over the past few years and my students are really suffering. This leaves our district open to lawsuits, but the real problem is the state's education budget. What can we do?? This isn't going to fix itself.

How long do you spend on core subjects if not a goal on IEP? So if most goals are life skills (putting shoes on, zipping, etc.) how long would you spend on math during math hour or how much do you worry about writing activities if they can’t write etc?

Do IEP team members other than parents have any rights? For example, when a student is moved from an alternative placement and the amendment meeting was only held with administrators and not with the general education or special education teachers. What happens when you don’t get invited, but should be??

Do you work the holidays into your lesson plans this time of year? Or is it too much of a distraction from your routine? Teaching a SPED music class this year and the students have finally *mostly* become comfortable in the room and with the instruments + noise. We usually work on the same songs each week for one month, but I'm thinking of switching it up and doing Christmas/Holiday songs next week as a send off into break. I work with mostly autistic students.

Hi. I am a Transition teacher in California. I would like to know what is the ratio of students to staff for community outings in your districts? I have been teaching in my district for 20+ years and it has always been 4:1 ratio for our moderate/severe transition classes. Now our director is saying it's 6:1 and I don't feel like this is safe for our students.
