Confession: I sometimes dread being introduced at meetings because people assume HR is there to deliver bad news. I want to be seen as a partner, not a problem. Have you ever been misjudged because of your role?

When I would schedule meetings at my old workplace, they were all so used to feeling traumatized and afraid to be laid off that when I had to meet them I’d always put in the meeting notes “I’m NOT laying you off, don’t worry!” Or I would immediately tell them at the beginning if I didn’t schedule it. Yeah, it was that rough.
I’ve found the best approach is the make an effort to get to know at least one or two in each department. Share things about yourself so they see you are an employee just trying to do your work, like anyone else. The line is fine but I can tell you, it CAN be adhered to and you can manage it well if you work at it.

That’s such a good idea—disarming people upfront. I might steal that line because the tension is real when HR shows up. Building those personal connections feels like the only way to soften it.

Most of the time. They always assume I'm there only to impose rules or police everything.

Exactly. It gets exhausting being seen as the rule enforcer. I want people to realise we’re here to support, not just police every move.

Jumped from public to a job in a place run by boomers but I just wanted out of public so I took the first offer that came to me. 5 months in and I realized it's not a good fit at all. Mainly the CFO thinks no one should be working from home, and working from anywhere but the office is considered a day off to him. Is this a good reason to apply for other jobs right now?
