... do it!" And I just smile and offer my condolences and then go scream into a pillow later. When people who aren't addicts do sober periods for fun I want to support that but it's not easy to avoid resenting it. I fought tooth and nail to get here. It sucked.
@SeniorCW If you identify as an addict or alcoholic and are trying Sober October, that is so different! I am proud of you whether you succeed or not, it is a triumph for you to try at all. If, like my friends whom I very much love, you saw the Whitney documentary and decided to give sobriety a cute lil' try but in actuality probably have no real problem quitting other than it's now hard for you to go to bars, I have less sympathy for you.
And I care for these friends! I know I sound like an ass here. Thanks for allowing me to vent. 🙃
Addict here. Encouraging you. But trying sober October myself. Ps - I sucked at the game.
Thanks for sharing.
Next month do them one better. Do a 30 day Bikram Yoga challenge. You will look amazing physically too.
Haha @EP that particular challenge may drive me to a relapse...... Maybe in year ten? I'm at 1.5 years and my exercise routine can best be summed up as quarterly gym visits and living in a fourth floor walkup and not drinking for 1.5 years.
Senior DP I feel sheepish saying it, but I totally thought that too at first! I think their main bone of contention is we're all relatively young and in advertising and they're having trouble finding ways to socialize that aren't parties or get-togethers in bars. Whereas when I quit (every single time I tried to quit at the end) I had trouble with things like not shaking and not feeling sick for days and not wanting to die of shame. So it seems to me their problems staying sober for a month are "normal" ones.
Nah, not considering it cute. Just one more of many tries. Failing here and there this month. Four-five days in (I’ve found counting to be harmful), but it’s a nice gimmick for me this time around.
Honestly, you’re right about your buds. It’s not light-hearted for folks like us.
Onto November. Thanks, be good
If they are having problems staying clean for a month, sounds like they may still end up in recovery at some point??? 🤷🏽♀️
Senior CW - you've got this. I know how hard it is. I know very well the feeling of not even wanting to try to count days. I could easily be back there any minute. I'm super proud of you for trying. The hardest part is just getting back up sometimes.
@ACD... try to surround yourself with friends in recovery. Not saying to give up normie friends, but I do feel you need to be honest with them about the seriousness of your disease and how the sober October made you feel. As the years go by, those kinds of situations will matter less and less. Of course if they are serious take them to a 12step meeting to see the real deal.
