I cant be the only one who thinks 7% still seems like a lot...
Wow and only 7% of all bags of sour patch kids are laced with ricin. But most are edible.

Those 7% must be attended by Proud Boys.
7% of a million is a large army of rioters

You realize you’re excusing violence, right?

You know what other event was peaceful 93 percent of the time? WWII.

I'll download and look at later. Questions that come to mind:
1) 7% of BLM protests are violent, how does that compare to other movements?
2) What is the raw volume of violent protests? Especially in comparison to other movements
3) How concentrated or distributed are the violent protests?
What I suspect, and I am biased, is that Violent BLM gets attention because there are many violent incidents in urban centers, and 7% downplays how often they are violent, because a ton of peaceful protests happen in the burbs. Second, I suspect that the raw # of violent protests is orders of magnitude higher than that of any other prior movement.
Both matters, would explain the media attention. In addition to the obvious one: Partisan Politics

So a few things to note:
1) what constitutes violence for this data set? its not readily apparent on their website. For example, Austin Texas did not appear to be lit up in orange and as we know there was a shooting there - why was this not included?
2) what constitutes property damage? Would the event in NY be considered damage if it's only a few chairs and/or tables damaged or would it need to be an entire building burned or multiple store windows smashed?
3) notice in the link at the end of this post that they list violent protests for BLM but not for COVID protests. That leads to what is the baseline expectation and why do they not provide the same stay for both 'categories' of protests.
4) 7% of over 10,000 protests being violent, is still a lot of violent protests, regardless of what threshold they are using.

Which is higher than covid death rate.

Why are any violent? Why should social justice be violent, ever?
I do not believe this dataset to be accurate. Especially when you have places like the Anti-Defamation League saying there has been 0 instances of left-wing violence in 2020. That is factually incorrect by any metric you classify “left-wing”.
EY1 brings up a great point. You’re down playing that 7%. We shutdown the country for a 2% mortality rate. Can you imagine the hysteria if it was 7%? The fact is the violence is escalating from the riots. Now people are being attacked in restaurants and residential neighborhoods.
You’re right we’re overreacting.
Can you clarify, please?
