Do any of you use a standing desk and walking pad combo while actually working? I’m interested in setting this up at the office to help get some movement in during the day. However, I’ve never been able to read on a treadmill and I’m concerned about my ability to take notes during calls or actually work while using the walking pad. What has your experience been?

I can barely walk and chew gum at the same time 😂 I assumed the people with walking pads just did it during mini work breaks, while listening to a larger meeting that didn’t require notes, or in place of an afternoon walk outdoors. I didn’t think people actively worked while using them.

That makes more sense. I’m the same way. I tried to stand up during a phone call yesterday and lost my train of thought 😹

funny

I don't have a walking pad yet but one of the partners does. I only see her use it periodically. I do have a standing desk that can be raised and lowered. I love it and think it keeps me from getting tired in the afternoon 😴 with the ability to stand up after lunch

Ive only ever been able to do it while on calls or in a meeting where I don't have to take notes. It's too hard to type and walk.

helpful

I don’t have a walking pad, but I have a standing desk. I like using it throughout the day so I’m not sitting all the time. I’d find it hard to use the walking pad while I had to type something.

I have one, and I love it. I typically walk at a pace of 2.6 to 2.8 mph and I am still able to read and type. I typically use it when I am working on less analysis/thought intensive work though. For example, while on phone calls, reading through emails in the morning, drafting, simple agreements, etc.

Is there some option to lift weights with my legs under my desk? I feel like that’s the only thing I would actually do.

You can tie them in a loop and use your own body for the resistance

Yes! Good for reviewing documents, not so much for intense thought work. You’re going so slowly it’s not really disruptive

Kind of depends on the nature of your work. Good for long meetings or on a virtual CLE, waiting for your case to be called on a virtual appearance, etc...

I use mine while typing, reading, just about everything. (I usually don't use it while on calls, just because mine automatically stops after a period of time and announces the stop, which I dont want to risk clients hearing due to bad timing.) It really is much slower than typical treadmills. I usually go at a bit of a pace, but my settings go all the way down to glacial. If you can read and pace (as I have done since I was a kid) you can easily read and use the machine, probably the same for typing. If you're like my spouse and any movement while reading is a Problem, then this probably isn't the combo for you. If you just want to walk during short breaks, better to go outside and get some sunshine while you're at it.

I have one but honestly can only use it if I’m watching a presentation in which I’m not participating. Too hard to draft documents.

I have one and use it while I’m drafting documents, especially documents that are easy for me to draft. I just put on workout music and walk while drafting - it’s a game changer!

A4 that’s fantastic! I wish I could do that without losing my balance.

I just walk slow! And my hands are resting on the keyboard so it’s easy to balance.

I have it. I use it during meetings but not that often. But I like having it. One week I had a lot of meetings and I walked like 4 miles.

I have one at home and I love it, though I don’t use it as much as I should. I usually use it when I’m on calls and don’t have to talk/have my camera on or when I’m doing easier work (reviewing docs, updating a checklist, typing out instructions for a summer/first year). My firm just started requiring 4 days in-office, so I’m debating getting another walking pad.

Just make sure you have good sneakers with solid arch support + that your desk is positioned so you don’t have to lean forward too much. Otherwise you can really fuck up your back (speaking from experience lol)
