Do exit interviews actually lead to any real change, or are they mostly just a tick-box exercise? Curious to hear from others perspectives, does the feedback people give when leaving ever really get acted on?

For the company I work for, no. You type it up, hit submit, and no one ever hear about it again. Never heard anything back before.

We have used data collected from exit interviews, as well as rejections from applicants to change some of our policies. Such as 401(k) eligibility, PTO policy and tuition reimbursement. Sometimes the data collected can be used for counseling and feedback for management as well as improvement of process.

That would depend on the organization. Some of them take them seriously and give the comments credibility as they seem to come from a position of honesty. Other organizations probably just file them away and it is an exercise in ticking a box. I'm always curious if people really participate honestly in exit interviews, as the one time I had one I didn't really offer much. I figured they didn't listen to me when I worked there, so there was no point in putting a lot of thought into my exit interview.

I have seen both. They only work when leadership actually acts on the feedback, otherwise they become a formality.

Every time I speak to my director (at least twice a week), he works in how he is getting older into the conversation(humorously). For instance, he forgot something non-work related, said “sign of old age”. He recently told a story, said, this is how old people talk. He likes to come across as a grandfatherly figure, but I’m not sure what to say in these encounters. It is always an innocent, non work related context. Have you guys experienced this ? What is an appropriate response ?
