Every time I speak to my director (at least twice a week), he works in how he is getting older into the conversation(humorously). For instance, he forgot something non-work related, said “sign of old age”. He recently told a story, said, this is how old people talk. He likes to come across as a grandfatherly figure, but I’m not sure what to say in these encounters. It is always an innocent, non work related context. Have you guys experienced this ? What is an appropriate response ?

Need to mark this as funny AND helpful SM 1! Thanks lol

He’s prob getting to the age where he’s suddenly become self conscious about his age. Let him work through it. I’d just be positive and focus on work

like

Yes I get that he is trying to work through it. But it creates awkward silences during conversations when he brings it up randomly. No response feels “safe” as I’m not sure how he will receive it / what he is actually feeling right now

Are you a woman? If so, I would just recommend caution

like

Yes I’m a woman. What do you mean?

My boss does this too, I think it’s funny/endearing and I know he’s just making light of it, so I usually just laugh.

like

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

A director in another unit wants to meet me to “continue a conversation we started last year”. He is referring to the time I had asked him if there were openings on his team.
