I've experienced both. I had one retail store not even bother calling, and another called all three of my references. I'd prefer if they didn't because it feels like a waste of my references' time but it's their choice, ultimately.

Honestly for most hourly hospitality roles I’ve rarely seen full reference checks happen unless it’s a leadership position. Most places focus more on availability and how you present in the interview. If you’re worried about your current employer finding out, you can usually note “do not contact current employer” and most managers respect that.
