Partners need associates solely focused on doing their work and firm management is worried about nurturing the next generation of partners with well-rounded capabilities
This might be a “both are true” situation - it’s good to get experience and exposure doing BD, and it is not your job to “worry” about, possible the latter partners were trying to relieve pressure rather than exclude you.

This is a cultural thing, but it's great advice to nurture your contacts and BD skills, whether told to or not.
Which firm? Just curious as someone at a peer ECVC shop whose evaluating firms with a look to lateral.
Are you a corporate associate or specialist? I would think that only corporate can really do meaningful BD but that’s just my opinion.
I think the point is a lot of us want to do this type of development so we have a healthy practice when we make partner but the existing partners don’t seem to want us to spend any time doing that
