All the teachers in the SPED department write the IEPs. We all get our own caseload and due dates to hit. All teachers(gen ed/sped) are responsible for at very least looking at each SPED students IEP! The blame falls on admin and the sped coordinator mainly admin
An IEP writer???? Like that’s their only job? I know it happens some places but I could not fathom writing an entire IEP without knowing a student. Even just looking at data would be so insufficient. In my district the case manager is responsible for writing the IEP and reviewing all sections written by related service professionals. We do all of our annual reviews at the end of each school year so teachers are writing their IEP for the following year after knowing the student for nearly an entire academic year. It’s my understanding that any adult working with a student must have access to their IEP as they are required to implement the supplementary aids/modifications as written. I’m currently in the process of making sure staff working with my students have read their IEPs and clarifying anything they’re unsure or confused about. Your situation sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. I hope your special education admin are ready.
We write our own IEP’s (sped teachers). We collaborate with service providers and parents, counselors, and anyone else on the child’s team. We follow state laws and district protocols to get things done according to established legal timelines. Some of us are also classroom teachers and SpEd teachers at the same time. The workload is crazy! But we still have to follow all the laws. Good luck to your district! I hope they get their act together before the lawsuits start piling up.
