Reliability is kind of a baseline requirement for getting promoted anywhere. This isn't unique to finance. You can be the smartest person in the room and it doesn't matter if you're a flake. The people who get promoted tend to be both intelligent and reliable. And visible.

It's good to be brilliant but if you're brilliant but erratic you're probably doomed. Serious people in finance are always playing the long game, and success over time is what really matters.
