I've only done it when the application required one. And the times I've had to, I've been very lazy about it. Which I guess might be a misstep, but I'm the same as you and feel like no one actually takes the time to read them, and I really don't feel like wasting any more of my time on a job I probably won't even get a callback for.
Yeah I don’t usually write them!
Pro
I don’t write cover letters. As a manager when I’m searching for a candidate, I find that they are usually very generic with info I can find on their resume or through an interview
Yeah I’ve wrote a few cover letters in my past! Some have got me nowhere but some have got me interviews!
Rising Star
For most retail roles, the cover letter is rarely the deciding factor. Hiring managers usually scan resumes first. That said, a short, tailored one can help if the candidate is borderline. It probably will not carry you, but it will not hurt either.
I don’t usually write them but wondered if people did or not!
Rising Star
I get the feeling most cover letters in retail just get skimmed, if they’re read at all. Sometimes a short, specific one that shows you actually understand the role can help, but usually your resume and availability speak louder.
Yeah I guess, I hope it gets read the amount of time that goes into them sometimes!
