Thinking of starting one here. It’s needed.
I participate in ours and really enjoy it. We have in-person get together once every quarter. We also have virtual chats that are themed and open-ended. They also provide trainings during performance times that are tailored towards the black employee experience.
Our ERGs are really good but EXHAUSTING. There are always so many events and initiatives going on, it’s crazy
I’m a member and I’ve been to a couple of the meetings (they’re virtual). I’m over 40 and work in tech and I found that the group is really for the younger employees. The leaders of the group are newer in their career and I just found myself feeling out of place. One of the other 40somethings in the group felt the same way.
At my last job, there weren’t many opportunities to participate if you were not at HQ other than in Slack or virtual events. We’d often be promised swag, etc and never get it because the ERG leads kept changing. I tried to get one started locally but the business groups were too segregated due to schedules (overnight v regular), physical building locations, priorities, etc.
