I work in cannabis. It’s the same as any other category. You have to understand the space. It mirrors food, beverage and wellness - similar in many ways to coffee, wine, beer and supplementation. Medmen is a good place to start connecting in NYC.
Retail, POS, events, social and PR specialists are all in demand.
Look to see when the next CannaCon is in your city. It's a great place to meet others in the industry and can give advice.
To really get into it from a marketing/advertising perspective You gotta know someone who is associated with a grower or a direct buyer for a product group. It’s currently the Wild West but having a grow contact is the best because they control the pipeline. I’d reco not to mess dispensaries. Most everyone in the industry knows very little about strategy and marketing/advertising so the opportunity is big. We may be looking for a strategist eventually
Where are you located? I'm in NY and starting to read up on cannabis marketing companies but doesn't seem like any is starting up here until it's fully established and legalized in this market - otherwise it's mostly sales. But there's so many businesses that I see potential to blow up once that happens. There's a lux vape/weed paraphernalia store called Higher Standards in Chelsea market and I love their branding/approach so far.
I'm not in but in contact with different headhunters and they tend to prefer people from drinks or food industry.
