I live on Oahu - feel free to DM if you want more specific recs. I’ve also got a ton of food/drink recs if you need those. Note your options change dramatically based on whether you rent a car
Hikes
- Makapuu tidepools (same path as the lighthouse, but you veer off down the cliff where the whale watching sign is)
- Lanikai pillboxes (go for sunrise)
- Hanauma Bay Ridge (go for sunrise)
- Kuliouou Ridge (moderate difficulty)
- Wiliwilinui Ridge (wait for a clear day - often cloudy at the top)
- Lulumahu (short to a waterfall)
- Crouching Lion (pretty steep but very short, view is definitely worth it)
Beaches/water activities
- Lanikai beach
- Kayak to the Mokes from Lanikai/Kailua
- Kayak/walk/swim out to mokolii (Chinamans hat)
- Waimanalo Beach/Sherwoods (good boogie boarding but avoid the week after the full moon - jellies)
- Makapu’u Beach (good boogie boarding, but waves can be a lot)
- Skip Waikiki, but if you really want to do it go towards the Diamond head side past queens or go down to Kaimana
- Hanauma Bay (if you can get a reservation, don’t stress if not)
- Snorkel at Shark’s Cove (only summer, dangerous in winter)
- Snorkel at Electric Beach
- Mermaid Caves (only get in if it’s low tide)
- Sunset Beach
Do the free museum and Arizona tour at Pearl Harbor - it’s really well done and a moving memorial
+1 for electric beach. Only time we got to snorkel with/next to turtles! P.S. be careful coming back in with the rocks, wife scraped her foot up pretty good when leaving.
Outrigger Waikiki Beach was great! Right above Duke’s. Go to Diamond Head, take a little tour bus around, go to Hanauma Bay snorkeling (!!!), Kualoa Ranch (Jurassic park UTV tour), visit Northshore, and snorkel at Electric Beach!
Rent snorkels from Snorkel Bob’s (make sure to reserve online)
Hyatt Place Waikiki Beach! Less than a five minute walk from the beach. They also include chairs and boogie boards for free. There’s nice shopping and food areas around there as well
For restaurants, I definitely suggest Marugame - cheap and quick udon
Hilton Waikiki Beach Resort on Kuhio. Cheaper than the Hawaiian Village one and you’re a short walk to the beach. Dominoes and Starbucks are a block away in the Marriott, and McDonald’s and ABC Stores are nearby too. They also provide daily complimentary beach chair (one) or boogie board. Also a quick walk to International Marketplace if you need to do some shopping.
You went all the way to Hawaii to eat dominoes, Starbucks and McDonald’s…
