This is how to spot someone with only fluffy soft skills and no technical chops. 😁
In my career through Cap, EY, Accenture and now Deloitte, I've jumped from being an industry SME, to SAP, to S&O and now Salesforce. My time in pure strategy after grad school was the least rewarding time of all. Coming up with hypothetical solutions to business problems is the ultimate proverbial wheel spinning. SAP, Workforce, Salesforce or any other package-specific consultant does everything a strategy consultant does, but in the frame of a technology platform, and then retrofits that platform to the needs of a client. For example, in relation to Salesforce, a client will come to us and say: "I don't have a CRM system and run my business in excel - please help me define what cutting edge customer relationship management should be for me." At that point in time, we define the operating processes for that client and then build those out in the system. Sure, there are some folks that are pure techie folks, but the bulk of us are techno-functional. Hope that helps OP!
Woah boring job? I wouldnt go that far...they are some of the most well paying jobs! Much better than advisory or change management for example.
D1: You would be surprised at the creative thinking it takes to solution something in WD or SAP. I don't think my job is boring at all.
OP: It is not awful. I have a feeling D1 can make anything sound awful.
20 years of SAP consulting here .... I'm pretty much retarded
I'm a Workday consultant. I work with HR teams to translate their process into the Workday system. Sometimes, their processes can't be translated directly and then we help them redesign their HR around it. Management and Strategy consulting might seem super impactful at a high level, but they often write checks they can't cash, and it's up to me as a lowly solutions architect to figure out how it'll actually work
You are a consultant. It's your job to be a step ahead of your clients. You learn and master the new technology. Workday could be irrelevant in 10 years, so you learn the new one or support workday at clients where it's already been implemented.
I was thinking of D1s ridiculous post
Yeah not sure about boring or lack of critical thinking either...
P1, master slide config
D1 I am sure your projects are the most earth shattering and culturally significant projects out there 🙄🙄🙄
How about instead of projecting and putting down someone else for a unique skillset for how they make a living you focus that negative energy on your own insecurities and improving yourself
They are functional consultants specialized in implementing a solution, often only a specific module. They basically have a boring job where critical thinking is rarely required.
Monkey see requirements. Monkey do config. Monkey test config. Monkey happy.
Sounds awful
Yeah, what technical skills do you have D1? Tell us!
Examples of projects I've done after leaving pure strategy work:
1- building a social media app for a group of executives
2- building a mobile app for a bank
3- setting up a lead management solution for a PE firm
4- coming up with the strategy (and sourcing) of automated virtual agent and live agent teller/self-service stations to replace brick and mortar banks
5- coming up with a digital payments solution for a client
6- building a mobile app focused on canvassing (for an election campaign)
7- mobile app for supply chain/logistics division at a large CPG client
I think these experiences have allowed me to make a direct impact for my clients and position me for a Product Management to VC role in the future if I play my cards right.
This might get interesting
Can you all expound more on your roles here? In my novice career I've only experienced business consulting that's generalist. Is this this just a consultant that specializes in everything workday? What if workday isn't the go-to product anymore?
You guys are so cute.
Sm1 quite helpful! Interesting indeed, seems like a helpful practice too.
