Think of that McLaren you’ll be able to buy and the number of children from multiple marriages you’ll be able to send to private school

lol what an ass
Same boat as OP. I feel like the close I get to the line (finish line or starting line?), the more it feels like a plain, old-fashioned popularity contest. And I’m not so popular in this crowd.
I’ve always been an alpha-type. Not one of those red-faced, table-pounding dufus alphas, but very assertive and very “intense” (I really don’t know what that means). As I creep closer to the partnership line, I find partners complaining about my attitude and, frankly, my personality. I’m in bet the company litigation, so you might think that partners search out assertive associates who can hold up in hostile depositions and manage a hot bench. I’ve found that the most assertive partners prefer to work with lackies.
In fact, I put my thesis to the test: I’ve recently worked with a rainmaker who is new to my world. He doesn’t understand the dynamics of the space, and he’s proposed several bad theories. Normally, I’d agonize over how to help steer his thoughts in the right direction. I’d fail my intention of subtlety. Someone would say that I should have approached him in this way or that way. That’s the normal course.
Instead, I cheerfully agreed with this rainmaker every time he asked for my opinion. This has been an incredibly rewarding experience. This guy is excited to speak with me every time we have a call. He’s friendly. He asks where I’ve been his whole life. He’s my new best friend.
Lesson learned: Kiss up. Is the next lesson going to be the virtues of kicking down?

You can always leave after you become partner.
