It's an uncomfortable position to be in, but not that uncommon. Try not to think of it as a competition though or it will make your work life a lot more uncomfortable, especially when one of you gets promoted over the other. If you can avoid bringing it up, do that, and just focus on yourself and making the best impression you can for getting the role.

Thank you for the advice. It’s hard to be competitive when I am a competitive person but I don’t want to think like that. That usually gives me anxiety but you’re right. I have to show up and do the best I can do.

Totally get that feeling. I’m in a similar spot at work right now, there’s a promotion I’m interested in and someone I work closely with is too. It’s hard not to feel like you’re competing, even when you just want the best for yourself.

Ok, I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels this way. I try not to be competitive but it’s like it’s a natural instinct for me. I don’t like that but I try not to get way into my head and over think the situation. That’s when everything goes down hill for me.
