You raise an interesting point. This job market is so tough that people need to be hyper competitive. There's definitely pressure to perform. It's like it's necessary to go into an interview totally determined to crush it and make it seem like you could just walk right into the job.

Yes, exactly. That’s such a good way to put it. The pressure to be hyper-prepared is real. It’s exhausting, but it almost feels necessary right now.
I would say depends on the company and depends on if you have a recommendation from someone already at the company. But yes, companies are definitely increasing their experience checks before hiring.

Yeah, that’s fair. Having a referral definitely changes the dynamic and can ease some of that pressure.
I definitely feel this. And while I get it, they want to be sure, at a certain point, it becomes ridiculous and contrived. And it feels like we're doing a bunch of unpaid labor just for the chance of getting paid labor.

I feel that. There’s a line between showing you can do the job and basically doing unpaid work for it. After a certain point, it starts to feel less like an interview and more like free labor.
My previous manager was like this....he hated candidates who needed hand holding and being spoon fed. They want self driven independent folks. I had recorded the interview I had done when I had gotten hired as I always do so I can learn from it and I realized a lot of his questions were pointed in that direction and after I did get selected and join, he was impressed that i would go through emails, links and figure stuff out myself and put in access requests myself and not bother him unless absolutely necessary. Later when he used to put me on interview panels to hire other candidates, he would give feedback on candidates based on how he felt they were independent and self driven and the type that take ownership.

That actually makes a lot of sense. Some managers really care a lot about independence and ownership, so they’re listening for that from the start. But it’s so cool that you could look back at your interview and see it so clearly.
No. Never.
