Has anyone shifted from an attorney position to a contract manager position? I’m looking to get out of law but want my JD to be an advantage. I’m looking for something that pays well even though I realize it won’t be as high as what I’m making now.

Along the lines of what A2 is saying, I once had an exploratory call with an in-house recruiter for a company that was looking to hire a “commercial counsel.” The bulk of the job was reviewing contracts. The job was 100% on-site with the attorneys regularly working 50-60 hour weeks and weekends. Pay for a 5th/6th year was like $145k… the recruiter was like “but we have an Olympic sized saltwater swimming pool you can use.” Lmao.

Depending on the institution you may be doing more work for less pay.

You may want to check NALP for “JD advantage” jobs. Practice managers, recruiting, attorney development options can be in the 200k range depending on location.

I’ve always wondered this myself. Although these positions always seem to be huuuge pay cuts.

Hi! I shifted into a senior contract administrator role (probably same as or a notch below contract manager depending on the size of the organization) after 4 years at firms. I’d just had enough and needed a break with reasonable pay. It wasn’t too hard to learn the ropes and it was WAY less stressful. After about a year and a half in that role, there was an opening in the law department so I applied to that and got it, where I’ve been for 3 years now, fully practicing and bumped my salary back up to lawyer levels. Both jobs are almost always 9-5, no weekends. If you’re burned out, these schedules and expectations are so healing.
