I started teaching in 1993 and retired a couple years ago. I guess many would consider me from the “olden” days of being an educator. Here’s my list of things that i wish they were like they used to be…
1. Children respected their teachers, without question.
2. Parents, and admin respected teachers enough to trust their observations and help needed for kids.
3. I miss books and paper learning. I think children got more from it.
4. I miss teachers dressing up each day. It looks more professional.
5. I miss kids natural wonder to learn things.
6. I miss parents packing their kids lunch.
7. I taught 6th grade for 28 years. I miss the recess they used to get. I still think it’s important for 11/12 years old to have recess to release some energy.
8. I miss parents who asked for advice and wanted to help their kid and the classroom with needed items.
9. I miss the excitement and joy of the first day of school.
10. I miss kids wearing regular clothes to school. I’m so sick of the pj bottoms and crop top. Yes, I send them to the office to deal with it, but the next day here they come in pj bottoms and a crop top.
11. I miss that parents made their children have some sort of hygiene routine. The kids today roll out of bed, drink chocolate milk (spill it on themselves) then come to school.
12. I miss when kids dressed appropriately for the weather.
13. I miss hearing please and thank you.
14. I miss that parents knew what their children were learning in school and making sure homework was done.
I could go on, but the nostalgia of those days is what I want back. I’m tired of the phones, social media, and that fact that it seems that they are checking their social media constantly. I miss the old days when I redirected children not because I hated them, but because I wanted them to learn how to work with others.
I have been teaching since 2001. I miss feeling safe at school and having fire drills be the only kind of drill we had to practice. School shooter drills really bring me down.
I miss having more autonomy and creativity in my teaching. Yet, I also miss teaching reading the the old SBG basal readers! I had so much success with that curriculum. I miss seeing kids be kids naturally. The students I have these days are filled with so much anxiety. I miss their joy of learning.
I don’t miss hand- written plan books, though! Or using clear contact paper instead of laminate. Somethings are easier! 😂
Things are less “paper” and more “tech” now
I have only taught in early childhood education; 14 years for the USAF Or DOD Military Child Development Centers and now over 20 years as a CCSD PreK Teacher. I must say things have definitely changed. I used to think that children don’t change but I am now realizing that having worked with 2-5 year old children for over 34 years, they have changed. I don’t know about anyone else’s experiences but I feel that the children are more worldly, they know things that a 4 year old should not know. For example, one child said to me “he put up the middle finger “ or dancing like they are in the movie “Dirty Dancing “ , cussing , just inappropriate stuff! And when you tell the parents about their kid’s behavior they blame on the school ( they don’t do that at home they must’ve picked it up at school), or they blame it on a specific student’s name in the class that they heard about, or they even blame me, the teacher!
Back in the day, teaching PreK was fun but it has become in my perspective, one of the most difficult, stressful, thankless, tiresome, areas to teach in!
