It’s so silly that we have to consider this tactic. Unfortunately, my first job has the best agency “brand”out of all the agencies I’ve worked at (I’m in the double digits- anyone else?) so that won’t work for me. Good thing I’ve just gone brand side. Moot point - for now.
Yes… been doing it 22 years I feel you
I had an early role I want to keep too so guess I’m keeping it all for now
Been in this business 18 years and dropped my first two roles in the industry. Always made a point that years of business was a good thing.
Dropped it from my resume when I turned 40.
Did it get me more interviews and opportunities? I don’t know but it made me feel better haha
I dropped first two roles when interviewing at agencies. Just took a brand side role any played up ever single year of experience
I haven’t even thought about doing this. Do you recommend it? Ugh, they should want us for our expertise!
No apologies necessary! I’m coming up on 46. Our experience should be in demand. I think the challenge is the limited leadership roles in a pyramid org chart.
I’ve dropped at least three roles, but mostly because they are all like “copywriter” and largely irrelevant to my narrative and what I do today.
Dropped first two roles from the 90s even though they were reputable brands. Keeping the conversation to “over 20 years of experience” is fine for the discussions happening now. It all depends on what story you need to tell.
Yup. Dropped two roles here as well. The ‘90s are now dead to me.
Don't give in the ageism! Proudly show off your experience. I was offered a really great job when I was 61. You just have to work at the right places.
I recently got a gig specifically because of a role I had 20 years ago. The interviewer was really tight with my old boss from that agency.
I’ve been in the business for more than 30 years so you can bet I’ve left out a number of previous roles. Most aren’t even relevant anymore compared to what they I do now. For example, as a CD it’s far more relevant if I enticingly just my CD roles (which I’ve been doing for quite a while) than whether I was an AD, a visualizer (remember those?) or a CW.
Do you put your college graduation year?
I don’t even include my college at all. At my age it’s beyond irrelevant.
