Have you ever been promised growth but given no time or resources to learn? That gap really shaped my experience. What did growth actually look like for you all?

It made me realize that I have to be responsible for my own growth. A lot of companies don't really care if their employees grow or develop in their careers, we have to do it ourselves.

Great thoughts

I'm in it right now and as the cliche goes, pondering life's choices. I'm starting to dip my toes into the job market and see what's out there. I had hoped that I landed my last stop before retirement but in the 25+ years in my field, I have never seen a company with so much high school drama, poor HR, and lip service.

That sounds incredibly heavy, especially after so many years in your field. When experience tells you something is off and it still doesn’t change, it really makes you reevaluate what you’re willing to tolerate. Dipping your toes in the market makes a lot of sense in that context.

In a perfect world, getting some resources and time, but balancing that with your own initiative and figuring it out is the best. You don’t know how to do something until you are in a position where you can fail at it. But for many companies, you are thrown to the wolves and then asked what went wrong. That is awful.

scapegoat culture doesn’t help performance, trust, or growth in the long run. It often feels like a symptom of deeper leadership and systems issues rather than individual failure. It’s frustrating to watch it repeat across so many places.

Yes it happens all the time

Exactly. The fact that it’s so common is part of what makes it feel so draining. When patterns like this show up everywhere, it really forces you to rethink what healthy growth should actually look like.

I was called into HR because a coworker overheard a conversation between me and another colleague taking about cable/streaming shows that we watched or recorded. I mentioned that I recorded a few true-crime shows. My colleague jokingly said, "I hope I'm not on your hit-list!". I replied, "Not anymore." HR pulled me in to say a coworker complained about me talking about hit-lists, and they were now scared. HR wouldn't say who complained, so do I have a right to ask about the resolution to this?

Recently started my own firm and interested in others thoughts. Are there resources out there for practical advice or is it only something that comes with experience? For example, I can take let's say a 601A client and use the resources available to me to learn how to do it. But if a client asks me is it better to marry my fiance in her home country, bring her here on a K-1 or have her visit on a B-2, that's not learned from a book or webinar. How does one learn how to evaluate new cases?
