I haven't, but I know women who did. They just let their employer know that they weren't planning on coming back after their leave was up.
Before you give your employer notice, double check your firm's policy. Some employers require an employee to return from leave and work for the company for a certain period of time afterwards. If an employee leaves before then, the employer can ask to be reimbursed for the expense they incurred while the employee was on leave.
Is this enforceable?
I quit while on maternity leave with my first (at the end of a 4-month leave) and started with my new firm (where I made partner right on time) immediately after maternity leave. I interviewed 8.5 months pregnant with the new firm and had a written offer and verbal understanding I’d start post-leave (subject to notice if the first firm wanted it, which they, of course, did not).
I just told the old firm the new opportunity was aligned with my goals, thanked them for the time we worked together and moved on. Were they annoyed? Probably. Was it the best decision for me and my family? Unequivocally, yes. And I never looked back.
It’s not something I’d advise doing as a practice/repeatedly, but you and your family come first. A firm will nix you without a thought if they deem it in their interest. So proceed accordingly when you consider your options.
(Prior firm told me I’d need to have two nannies to ensure sufficient availability, thus the farewell with no backward glance;-)
A1 - absolutely not even close. And even if they had paid me a fortune, it would have been a hard no. They were terrible!
