I don’t give out references until the final stages of interviewing when asked to provide them before signing an offer. At that point it’s usually pretty safe to ask a trusted coworker to vouch for you, and they’re usually happy to do it.
Including references on a resume when applying is a bit outdated imo.

Oh wonderful! Congrats on getting to that stage hope it pans out for you!
And yeah totally fair I get that. My current ECD is my biggest op (he’s this way with everyone unfortunately), I would never ask him to be a reference. If your CD is a decent person, they’ll be safe to ask. Just invite them out for a coffee meeting for more discretion.
I’ve used my active boss as a reference. She had nothing but great things to say about me. It’s entirely dependent on your relationship with the person.
I wouldn’t have asked her to be a reference if I wasn’t positive she would have been supportive and gave me a glowing review.
Update: the CD was hella excited and supportive (but also sad). Told him nothing is final yet! But he’s like your would-be boss is a legend so go for it!
Only if you trust them.
As long as you trust them, I say do it.
Bold and risky. There are people who’d keep it secret of course, but you honestly never know.
Is it your boss who doesn’t know you’re looking? Risky. Is it your work bestie who wants to see you succeed? Go for it.
