Yes, a professor that I had in law school became a really great mentor to me. She took me under her wing pretty quickly after I began the program because we had a similar background and I think she saw herself in me, and now we check in every couple of months/she gives me advice when I need it about my career. I don't know how I would have found a mentor outside of school though
She use to be my manager and became a mentor.
In my experience, my mentors have generally wanted to mentor me. They extend an offer for guidance and I follow up with them (coffee, lunch, etc.) and I always express gratitude. I follow that model for people I want to mentor. I’ve noticed some of the Black women I’ve extended it to are less likely to follow up compared to other WOC or even the Caucasian men I mentor.
Yes, lucky to have 4. Each one helped me through certain phases of career/life. Primary mentor is a woman who ran a teen nonprofit and was a teacher. The connection was the shared similarities of life and community. We connect monthly via phone/social media/community events. She always helped to expand my network.
