Having second thoughts accepting an offer. I accepted a general lit position at a big law (more mid law) firm in part to get out of an ID firm (where I did non-ID gov investigations work and some lit). I resigned but current firm countered to match pay if I stay. What should I do? I don’t want to give up on white collar/gov work but I do want out of the current firm. Do I reneg, take the internal pay bump, and wait for a better option or take the jump and try to pivot to gov work again later?

Depends on where you live/if bigger firm has a lot of connections and influence because you will likely be burning a bridge there. Also, is there any possibility of doing gov/white collar at new firm? It’s hard to pivot internally to another practice but it can be done sometimes.

But honestly, I’d trust your gut that you want to leave the current firm. You can probably go back to your practice area in another, maybe better firm if you miss it with your prior experience and (I’m assuming) the weight of the new, bigger firm’s name on your resume.

I think it’d be really hard to stay at your current firm — they weren’t valuing you enough before and now they know you want out.
If you keep applying now or try to pivot later, I don’t think the move will be hard to spin (significant pay bump, thought there would be more opportunity outside of ID)

Yeah I would still get out. If you weren’t happy there, more money won’t make a difference
