Hey! Congrats on the new role! One piece of advice I’d give is to really focus on building strong relationships with your team. Clear communication, recognition, and understanding their needs go a long way. Also, stay flexible and ready to solve problems on the fly.. retail is always so unpredictable!
Thank you! I feel like this has been a fast couple weeks. I can tell you I’ve already dealt with some crazy situations.
Having worked as a Department Manager and as an Assistant Manager for (Walmart) learn from your fellow managers (and department managers especially. Some department managers may want to get over on you, they couldn’t with me because I would remind them, “hey I was a department manager too.”and ask questions (the only bad question, is the question that wasn’t asked) write notes (keep pens and a small note book on your person at all times, it’ll come in handy). Lead by example, work with your employees (is there a rule that says managers can’t get their hands dirty? I found that after you get into a groove (scheduling, reports to do, evaluations (pull some previous evals) before you do your first evaluation) notes from the store manager. You can spend an hour or two in each of your departments helping out (remember the lead by example. My days went fast when I worked with my people) your employees will notice. Get to know your employees (they are not just numbers or bodies), are they single, married, have kids, how long have they worked for the company (are they promotable?) granted you can find these answers in their files, but it feels more personable if you talk to your employees. Be humble, be fair, be firm. Remember where you came from.
This is real solid advice. These first couple weeks have been a bit overwhelming and a lot to learn. Hopefully it gets better. There are so many people on my team.
Work hard and be very personable and friendly to customers, co-workers and subordinates.
Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it.
Congrats on the position. Remember to be consistent with everyone in regard to the policies of the company. If you stick to the policies, the associates will respect you more. Don't make any exceptions. Be friendly but not friends.
