I am on the edge of the Chicago suburbs (so much more affordable than most areas within the metropolitan area). My salary is $230K with generally only $10-20K bonus.
Single income household for a family of four and would say it’s comfortable. Nothing spectacular but not struggling. Was a victim of moving when house prices were through the roof and interest rates high so things will be a little better if rates drop and I can refinance.
About $210k for my wife and I, no kids in Chicago. Able to eat, go out, and otherwise live comfortably while saving quite a bit.
Pro
NYC, and over $250k per person in the household
Nice! You mind breaking down your salary by base/equity/bonus? Numbers desired but percentage would work too. Thank you
I live outside of St. Louis and studies say you need to earn $89,357 to live comfortably here, but I earn $92,000 and I'm struggling to get by. So, I would say you need to bring six figures in at a bare minimum to live comfortably in the Saint Louis area.
I’m at $355k HHI in NYC. DINK.
We max out our retirement savings every year and we auto-contribute to a joint brokerage account, travel internationally 3 times a year, and I’m about to drop $10k on a watch I like.
So I’d say I’m pretty comfortable? Not sure what other NYCs think is “comfortable”. Could I be better? Perhaps I would like to own the roof on my head someday, but we’ll get there someday.
Yes, that is true. I’m grateful I have the option to move somewhere cheaper if I want to sacrifice commute time. If kids come, we’re thinking NJ with a good school district and we could probably even buy a 2BR.
I feel like for future income posts, we need to narrow down the groups. Here we got single household, SINK, DINK, SIWK, and DIWK.
It’s not relevant to look at other groups, unless you’re curious on how they fair. These groups aren’t comparable. They’re different dynamics.

💯 and including how you're defining "comfortable" in your response as there are clearly highly varied definitions of that
£40k in London, not enough but I’m only a year in so am working hard to get promoted and improve that figure to £50 k soon.
$206K salary only, not including additional comp. Miami. No dependents. Comfortable.
I moved here when I was at $150K and I thought it was fine then. It’s much more relaxed now though.
I'm at 180k in Nashville, and I'm pretty comfortable
Go for it

NY tri-state area, $250k HHI I think is probably a decent level to live here and not struggle.
I live in a suburb of SF and think 300k HHI is enough to live comfortably. I made 130 HHI when I first moved here and felt like things were fine but I was single, rented and had a roommate. Now with a family and married we make closer to 500k HHI and own, but think we could get by making less if we were more cautious with our spending.
Comfortable anywhere in the US is over 120,000. Likely nearer 200,000 given the insane inflation the past few years. Any lower answers are poor people pretending they are comfortable. I love the "I have 4 kids in the Midwest and am doing great on 60,000" that always shows up on these questions across the Internet.
Edmonton Alberta in Canada and a comfortable salary for a family of three is at least 120K from my side ..overall for my husband and I ..200K would make comfortable living for the family
