Yeah, I feel this way a lot at my company in Silicon Valley too. I think it helps to seek out or befriend other women at the workplace and recognize them when you can, or find other women outside of the office who are going through the same thing we are. I can't believe with all of the innovation in the tech industry over the last few decades that it's still a struggle to treat women equally and respectfully. Hang in there!
I wouldn't focus too much on people's reactions. I would focus more on what you are achieving. Make sure you are learning all the necessary skills to switch companies at any time.
Personally, there really isn't much to do about it rather than to focus on ourselves and how we can further improve our skills and work performance. I'm not saying we're not doing enough but our reality as women in this industry is that we have to double our effort with everything in order to be seen and appreciated.
You're not alone with this. I also noticed that males in my workplace are way too confident. They couldn't even walk their talk yet they're the ones who get applauded often. A mystery I couldn't solve lol.
Felt 100%. Nature of the beast for sure but I'm looking to disrupt it. Always feeds my ego when my male colleagues come and ask me for help. I have 1 coworker who champions me consistently and I feel like that's helping a bit.
If it bothers you that much, bring it up with HR. They're blatantly being misogynistic. It should either result in them being more fair with disseminating tasks or giving you proper recognition. Let's hope it goes well!
Honestly, this happens far too often. It really feels like men do the bare minimum and get applauded, yet we work our butts off and its like nobody notices. It really is a man's world and we are just living in it. It feels like it is getting better but its like we take one step forward and two steps back.
Yep, it's interesting that so many of us are having that experience...it's disheartening in some ways but it is a sign that we all need to be a lot more vocal in getting our accomplishments recognised!
