I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

This is a great space to move into in ESG. If you want to switch to ESG consulting I recommend staying at a “regular” consulting firm (versus an ESG consulting firm) because there are generally more opportunities and better pay. Supply chain sustainability is growing especially for manufacturing but also other industries. Happy to chat about it further. Just dm me.
Scope 3 is an excellent place to be atm. If you don’t have any background in it, then you can start the regular supply chain route and move to sustainable supply chain / scope 3. Start doing trainings related to energy management, general sustainability topics and such if you can. Certifications are always helpful. KPMG has hired a ton in ESG/Sustainability, so I recommend searching out folks on those teams and getting plugged in for networking, trainings, communities of practice, etc.
Anything in ESG/Sustainability means a highly desirable skill set. And, if you start building those skills and can’t keep growing them where you are go elsewhere. There is no lack of jobs in this field even in the midst of recession.
Definitely agree! It’s a recent topic and very challenging as we might not learned before in the university. I recommend you to study a bit from brightlive webinars to get some insights :)
