It’s a huge city so you’ll want to stay close to wherever you’ll be doing things. Closer in near River Oaks, Highland Village, West University Place, Bellaire, Tanglewood, and Memorial Park area are all nice areas. Going west Memorial. Farther out Katy, Sugar Land, the Woodlands, Clear Lake City, Pearland.
Are you a homebody or do you like action? Real Houston vibes are in the Galleria /midtown and Memorial City area. Med Center by Kirby/Holcolme is cool too. Outskirts of Houston will give you Westchester vibes. Boooorrrring so no to Katy, Humble, The Woodlands or anywhere North of Houston, that’s not Houston but far and comparable to upstate NY. If you want to be in the loop and fun part of Houston, then go to The Galleria/Midtown areas. Check out fancyapartments on IG. Get an Airbnb to feel out different neighborhoods. Some may also say The Heights but it’s very gentrified. Downtown has too many homeless. This has been my observation since moving here
Additional aspect, hate clubs and bars, am a complete homebody , however, love some of the busier neighborhoods you mentioned, as I enjoy being near good coffee shops and restaurants .
River Oaks, Montrose, rice village, and heights have the most to do.
Depends on what you’re coming to do and what vibe you’re looking for.
Let us know so we can point you the right direction.
If you’re concerned with safety and want to be in the inner city, the only area I’d recommend is the Heights. Though it’s a very young, trendy, party/social scene so maybe not as “low key” as you’re looking for. River Oaks, Rice Village, and West U are also good but probably way too expensive for you as an intern.
Just outside the city, Memorial, Spring Branch, Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, and Bellaire seem like a good fit.
And if you’re willing to have an hour + commute, there’s always the suburbs like Katy, Sugarland, Cypress, Pearland, the Woodlands, and Clear Lake

The Houston Heights! Lived there for 3 years now and absolutely love it! Lovely parks, great restaurants, and very safe.
The most reliably safe places will be River Oaks, West University, Montrose, the Heights, Rice Military, Galleria, Hyde Park, West Oaks, Hedwig Village, Hunters Creek Village, Memorial, Energy Corridor, and the very southern edge of Spring Branch running along the north side of I-10. Between those it’s basically just cost vs distance.
Note that you WILL need a car to get anywhere regardless of where you stay, so either rent one or plan on taking a ton of Ubers. On the plus side, this means you don’t necessarily have to stay next to key destinations, just be within reasonable driving distance. All the areas I listed above are within 10-20 minutes of each other by car.
Thanks! It will be myself and my significant other. It will not be clubs and partying, it will mostly be casual restaurants and activities during the day followed by low key nights
You want the Heights. Tons of great restaurants, low key bars, pretty outdoor walking areas. Right in town, not far from downtown
Thank you all for giving real answers! People ask this in the nyc bowl all the time and the most frustrating response is "all of NYC is safe if you're self aware" which is not the case

Lower Heights
Where are you going to be working? Downtown? Commuting long distance is not fun in Houston. There is no real mass transit that you willwant to use. So if you were interning in the energy corridor or The Woodlands, The Heights makes no sense.

I disagree - if you live in the center of the city the commute to the exurbs is not as crowded as the opposite direction that most people are going
If you like museums staying in the museum district near Rice us also a good option.
Higly recommend taking a tour of the downtown via tunnels. Guided options so worth it.
absolutely would recommend rice village for the food / bar options plus museum proximity!
