You’ll want to look closely at your commute.
Also useful to take a look at flood maps and crime map. Plug in your prospective address and see what you see.
I would probably say upper Kirby. Memorial, rice-military, Washington, heights, down into westU/rice village. There’s a lot to choose from. Really good clusters of restaurants and bars in all those areas - each area a bit different to each other. You may also like galleria/tanglewood/uptown but maybe not as much in your 20s.
For that price point, you can get a lot of apartment to a number of 2bed townhouses, to a few 3/2 type houses. Just have a look on Zillow.
I agree with montrose. Lived there for 3 years before getting a house here. Heights and upper Kirby are great too.
Most people will probably tell you Heights for bars and food, but I’d go Upper Kirby area. So many good food options in that area with easy access to River Oaks and the Galleria area
Agreed. DC native who moved to Houston last year. Live in Upper Kirby/River Oaks and love it.
Try Montrose or the Heights, you’ll be surrounded by lots of food options and bars. $2k should go pretty far
Agree! I’m in heights annex (west side of heights is cheaper and mostly young peeps around)… I would say Montrose is more fun for 20s and meeting people (def more walkable), heights better for 30s or when you’ve got a squad figured out
Montrose
I second Montrose.
Height or Montrose. Just don't ever do downtown. Homeless people everywhere along with not so classy crowd 🙂
I love that all the attorneys are on the same page here lol definitely agree with MS1. Heights is perfect for a young family.
Upper Kirby, Galleria
100% the heights. Montrose is a contender, but don’t move Downtown.
I bought on 20th street and I walk to happy hour too much 🥹
Make sure you live somewhere that is outside the 500-year floodpIain. If you fall in love with something in particular that is inside 500-year or 100-year, get an apartment on at least the second floor, with an elevated garage if possible. Houston flooding can be very bad, and it's likely getting worse.
There are recent reports of homes experiencing flooding outside the 500-year floodplain in Texas, i.e. you should aim to be more conservative. try to take whatever steps you can to avoid flood damage, it's a real nightmare.
To search flood plains, Google Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) Floodplains, you should be able to find some useful maps
Stay away from downtown. There are some new high rises there but you'll be dealing with homeless people every day. It's really bad (to those who said otherwise - when was the last time you walked around you building?). I don't care if you call them mentally ill, it's really an unpleasant view. Montrose is mostly older buildings but there are a couple of newer options. Heights is great, and arguably the most expensive area right now. No-one mentioned midtown, which is a choice for young crowd who likes to party and bar-hop. Galleria is centrally located and has lots of shopping and great apartments if you're willing to deal with traffic.
Homeless problem just as bad in mid Town
Heights, midtown, or Montrose. Eado is another option. I lived in Midtown in my 20s…In addition to being close to bars, I liked being able to get to the largest green space in the city (Allen pkwy/Eleanor Tinsley Park)…bike, run, walk your dog, etc. You can reach out to an established realtor with your requirements/budget and they’ll send you a list of places to rent (no charge & nothing to lose). I did that when I moved to Houston years ago…helped my search. Good luck and Welcome to Houston my friend!
Stay away from these recommendations:
Galleria
Eado
Downtown
DM me for useful and accurate recommendations. Ppl are going to come for me, but I don’t want you to be one of the many transplants that moves here and hates it because you chose one of those three locations.
IYKYK
Agree
Just went through the apartment search. Along w Dallas street near shepherd (regent square, Alta, Hanover, etc) are great. Within your price range, safe, and close to everything.
Live in one of these, looked at all of these and can confirm all of them are great 🙂
Willow bend… Meyerland!!! Welcome neighbor 😀
to the young person venturing to Houston… This is my native home… it’s big, crowded, beautiful, inviting, interesting, scary, safe, and unsafe all rolled into one!!! Be your own best friend for awhile!!! Read community reports and learn to become happy, safe and successful !! Welcome to Houston!!
If you’re downtown for work, Upper Kirby, Montrose or the Heights. Anywhere off of Memorial Drive so commute is easy. Also you can get a really nice 1BD apartment for your price range really anywhere
Washington Ave. Good bars and its close to all neighborhoods mentioned above - Heights, Montrose, midtown, downtown and buffalo bayou!
I just moved to midtown, and live next to gray st area and there's a ton of food and bars close by. I got a 2 bedroom 1200sq ft for the range you're asking for.
Upper Kirby/green way plaza area for sure! Best decision I made moving to that area
I also stay in that area and love it. I have easy access to downtown/midtown/heights/galleria should I want to venture out.
