The greater Houston area is the size of Connecticut. Where in Houston are you working?
Heights is a great area. I love it. Not a bad distance from city centre area.
Assembly Heights on Yale & 5th is nice
As above, you’ll need to provide a lot more info on you and what you’re looking for. Like ballpark age, family situation, what’s important to you as far as an area to live in. How much you’re willing to spend time driving places versus you want to be able to get places quick and Uber when going out - which then comes at a higher cost. How much you want to be urban, urban adjacent, suburban, ex-urbs/rural. If you have interest in being on/near the water/beach - or if you’re more I’d fly to Florida if I wanted to go to a real beach.
It’s a huge place. With just hundreds of niche areas. Unlike sorta Dallas where those niches stay more separate, houston is a lot more casual. But, little micro areas still have their own flavor and vibe that can make or break your experience.
Happy to help.
Right so, it is doable.
There are 1beds in montrose or galleria/uptown under 1k. They’re mostly older way less nice places but not inherently gross conditions or crime ridden, nothing like that. That’s trading quality & size for location.
You can get a lot of what you want all the way out to like Katy/cinco ranch/sugar land. Same towards woodlands would put you on the north side. Same league city. All those areas are firmly the suburbs but a lot to do out there just the same. In some cases, you can get more space/quality for the money. But you’re also going to end up driving further for some things.
The standard houston way to solve this problem is get a couple roommates and rent a 3/3.5 townhouse. You’ll get kind of 2500-3000sf with a big open plan 2nd floor and nice finishes throughout. You can definitely do that easily in the 1k (3k total) range. I did that all through law school and was very happy with it versus an apartment or longer drive.
If you’re looking for more like a 2bed cause you need a separate office for your work from home, than gets harder. There’s some stuff around bellaire that could fit the bill. It’s maybe again trading some space/quality for location at a price point, but there might be some gems in there. It’s a compromise you’ll still have to drive to things but it won’t be far.
When you start narrowing down some areas and drilling down on things that are most important vs what you’re willing to compromise on, then honestly just Zillow or whatever to see what’s listed and yelp/Google to read the reviews if it’s an apt complex.
If you really want to get ocd about this, hpd has a crime map and fema has harvey flood maps. Overlay the two with your housing search.
Montrose is pretty good. You can search any location here: https://msc.fema.gov/portal/search?AddressQuery=77006#searchresultsanchor
How much you want to spend?
commute can be long so would suggest to estimate driving times during rush hour. Use Google maps but make sure to check during rush hour e.g. regular (non-rush hour) times commute is 40 min but rush hour commute can be 80 min during rush hour
Basics: 27 y/o BW, single, no children, fully remote employee. Looking to be within areas that offer activities like paint nights, pottery classes, meetups, social clubs… things to do! Ideally price wise around 1k or under is preferred so I can still plan out of country travels and sporadic trips to see my mom. My sister lives in college station so within like an 1.30 of her would be great too!
You’re looking at around $1,300-$1,600 for what you want
That all depends on your budget and where you want to live compared to where you work. THere are tons of great places I would recommend but def need to know your budget.
77002 Luxury Properties is at the heart of downtown, close to shopping malls and restaurants. Units start at $850.
