If kids can miss school to celebrate the ugly acts of Christopher Columbus, they can surely miss to celebrate the Astros.
As a Native American, I can tell you that Columbus Day is not about the man, Christopher Columbus, but rather the significance of western civilization's discovery of the new world.
It's dumb. Tons of parents dont have easy access to child care and hisd put a ton of people in a bind by cancelling school on 24 hours notice. Lots of low income people are now scrambling for child care or having to take off work (and not receiving money they likely need) due to hisd's decision to cancel school for a sports parade. Talk about crappy priorities. Par for the course for this city though.
No one said they are daycares. Get a grip. You do understand that people have to make other arrangements when schools voluntarily cancel school on less than 24 hours notice, right? This isn't an inclement weather situation or safety issue. Why are you so worked about this Jake Maddox? Oh wait, it's because you are a teacher and enjoy the extra paid day off, a luxury that many low income families will not have today. What a joke
It's awesome, stop bringing people down just because you don't like baseball!
As a somewhat recent transplant, I’m honestly thrilled to see so much city pride. It’s one day. I’m sure the children will recover
Former teacher here -
Last time they won the WS more than half the school was gone. I think they just don’t want to waste a school day where no instruction was even getting carried out.
That said, I feel bad for working parents who now have to shuffle to find child care at the last minute.
I think it’s absurd and highlights our society’s misaligned priorities.
Yes, shared community joy should never ever be had. Back to the books, you illiterate children! And no dadgum smiles!!
It's one day...
Rising Star
Oh brother. Having to stay home last minute was slightly annoying. Otherwise, who cares. It’s one day out of 12+ years of education. And school is closed; they didn’t miss.
IMO, the issue is all these parents got like a day’s notice that their kid’s schools will be closed.
I mean, they’ve know the Astros were in the World Series for a minute now. Some sort of communication to the effect that school will be closed in the event of a city parade would have provided much better notice.
My God, are you the Fun Police Commissioner?
Yes and yes, and I’m making time to take them to the parade. I can understand others aren’t so lucky, but don’t be a rumpus grumpus about it.
Hell Yeah! It’s one day. Don’t be a sourpuss. If you don’t want to go to the parade or celebrate, do something else with your life today. Everyone needs a day of self care or a ME day including the kids.
After all the school closures for the pandemic (even when the science showed it was hurting children and kids didn’t get seriously ill), I find it a bit rich that teachers are complaining about closing to celebrate the Astros…it’s one frickin day…
Schools in and around Houston should definitely be closed today.
“People fail to realize the impact of missing school can have on kids.”
It’s one day. The impact of missing a random Monday in November will probably make a positive impact on students’ and teachers’ mental health and energy, especially if that Monday is right after a time change and in the middle of a harsh flu season.
Shucks I wish I had a day off with the kids lol
I’m fine with it for the kids’ sake - I think having some city pride is a good thing. My oldest is driving 3 hours from university to participate in the parade because he is so excited to be from Houston right now. I don’t know if it’s a great thing for the thousands of parents who have to scramble to find childcare, but the educational impact seems pretty minimal.
They’re not actually missing school if the school is closed. One fewer day of school instruction won’t make that much difference, and this will be a good memory for many of these kids, especially if they’re baseball fans.
Lol it’s one day
The reality is that folks would be calling out anyway so better to plan vs scramble.
It’s one day
It’s literally one day of school where a lot of kids would have probably been taken out anyways. It’s not a week long. Calm down.
