Some of my friends have gotten green cards through their employers. One switched from a company who would not sponsor her to a company that did (she was on her H1B when she made the transition). The companies were transparent about whether or not they would sponsor green cards and under what conditions (e.g. after one year of employment in some cases). Some employers do unfortunately take advantage of candidates they know are « trapped » or have limited options because of visas/green cards. That’s why some employees quit and move on immediately after getting their green cards. It sucks but in your case, I’d look for another job at a company that will sponsor your green card. Once you get it, you can do what you want.
I did about 15 years ago but that employer didn’t take advantage, however, I did see it at another company in which I was the only us citizen and everyone else was being sponsored for green cards. They most certainly took advantage of them and eventually let me go because I was too expensive for them. I’m sorry you’re going through that!
I will say that sponsoring a visa is a benefit so paying lower wages makes sense, however, demoting you or denigrating you in any way should never be accepted.
