It sounds like you may be referring to a re-engagement email campaign. It’s an email experience that triggers based off inactivity (e.g. person hasn’t clicked an email) for a certain length of time. Deploying 3 touches is common with touches at 30, 60, and 90 or 120 days. These are essentially “we miss you” messages that try to get the reader to engage with your emails. Then if they still don’t engage after the last touch, you can update their subscription status.
The benefit of doing these email campaigns is that it helps keep your email list engaged and remove those who no longer want to engage and therefore keep a healthy click through rate and over all healthy list. This type of list cleanup is important because if you endlessly email subscribers who aren’t engaging, you’ll eventually suffer escalating levels of blocking and junking by inbox providers.
The significance is so you are only sending to your most engaged and proven customers which will in turn drive sales and keep your deliverability metrics in good standing, you would send general campaigns to this list while segmenting your customers into specific lists so you can tailor content and offers specifically for them that you believe is more relevant to them.
