How do I avoid coming off as a total b!tch having to tell creatives I oversee to stop messaging me with “Hey good morning!” or “Morning!” and then waiting for a response from me before asking me or telling me what they want or need? I am drowning in to-dos and this kind of chit chat not only enrages me, but it really bogs me down and slows down my ability to immediately action what they want. I desperately need them to just get to the point but worry about being too direct about it. 🥲

Hiiii! 👋

You’ve gotten good advice on how to address the team at large. And while I’d also rather they get to it, I understand it’s a social nicety to say hello and how are you before diving into a request. Would it kill you to reply, “hey there, whatcha need/how can I help you?” This doesn’t feel like an issue worth falling on your sword for.

likesmarthelpful

I agree but I think the issue is if she sees the messages. Later and they don’t actually send the request because she didn’t reply to the hi. Or that’s what I understood

like

I am a creative who gets this kind of message from marketing. I won't reply until they give me some idea of what they want. It works well and has nearly stopped the issue. Now, I just need to figure out what to do when someone breaks up a sentence into 5-6 short messages 🙃

like

This. I just don’t reply

I’m in my perimenopause years and when things pile up I have to really stop myself from losing it.

I think if you tell all of them at once (so no one feels singled out) and say something like “hey everyone, I want to make sure in responding to your requests in a timely manner. Since everyone’s schedules and needs are different, could you please send me the request and relevant context? This will keep things moving for all of us and that way you can share what you need without waiting for me.”

like

I’d take a beat before sharing this. You seem angry and worked up (get it), but say it in a way that’s constructive vs reactive is my advice. Eg guys i appreciate the friendly messages but when you message me I need you to get straight to the point or else it affects my ability to prioritise etc

likehelpful

It is a generational thing. Just be clear how you want them to communicate

likesmart

ya agree about the generational thing — younger folks grew up with text/chat being their main every day comms with friends and even school. I’m sure they don’t mean to distract you :)

I’ve just flat out told people it’s an efficiency thing, if you’re saying hi I have no idea if you just want to chat with me or if you need something from me. I can’t assume unless it’s communicated to me, and a hi is not a priority message on a very busy day.

For the people who still did it after being told, I wouldn’t reply until they followed up with what they wanted or if I was catching up on messages hours later.

like

just tell them, please hit me with a to-do list and save small talks for dedicated small talk time! (like team outings or whatever y’all do)

Doesn’t sound like “you’re coming off as a total bit@h”. Sounds like you probably are one. Absolutely abhorrent to work with.

likefunny

Lmfao. Guess we found the person who messages “hi”.

funnylike

Honestly the next time they do it I would just reply with "btw for future reference I won't find it rude if you just send me the full request immediately 😂"

I'm a millennial though so putting emojis or a "lol" at the end of everything to make it less serious is kind of a go to. Lol

Lol

Same happened to me. I started telling my team that im crazy busy running with a thousand tasks and so they should drop me their requests and id get to them in priority order as soon as I have a minute. It worked:)

Omg really? My FYP better deliver 😂

Oh boy- my PM does this and it makes my blood boil. I couldn’t imagine there will be a whole conversation about this here. A relief tbh, as I thought it was me , and not appreciating niceness.

like

I’m a PM and I loathe “Hi” message followed by nothing! Send your PM to me, I’ll have a word with them. 🔥

Funny thing was my younger PM boss used to to the same to me as well, and because she’s my manager, I couldn’t just ignore her. Sigh. My current younger boss also sends “Hi” but he always follows up with a thousand things for me to do.

Anyways, I encourage you to just ignore your PM. 😹

Do a daily check in even if it’s for 15 minutes. Make it daily. If nothing’s going on cancel it. I know creatives who would call it open office hours on zoom. 9:30-9:45. That stops the random texts as well as gives transparency into workloads.

I agree!!!! Just tell me what you want!!!!

Also I tend to not reply back to the hi, and force the request

A long post: seeking some perspective. My husband of 2 years that I’ve been in a relationship with for more than 8 years just woke up one day and told me that he’s unhappy in our relationship. I’m devastated because he’s never expressed anything like this in the 8 years. He’s been super supportive and loving, even when we were in a long distance relationship. He supported my career and dreams and this just doesn’t make sense. We have gotten a counselor but things aren’t getting better. Comment>
