+1. As i get closer to the end, I care way more about quality, innovation and people development.
This is hard in a company which only values immediate revenues at all costs and selling large offshore-delivered mid-low quality projects. We still do high quality work in pockets and I will continue as long as i can to try to shape a few people of the next generation.
I frankly don’t care too much about total comp anymore but I wish good work was more recognized.
At the same time, it seems that some clients are just not that interested in high quality anyway and are not holding the bar high enough, as long as it is cheap.
So in the end, the market clears at the right level and dinosaurs need to go away.
Somewhat shocked to hear people focusing on scale over quality.
At IBM it is all about scale, we actually can’t do the small stuff. Mainly because we aren’t as focused on quality.
Secret is go for scale, then you are too big to fail. Clients have to keep IBM around as they can’t manage the degree of change yo get us out. (Our problem is getting new clients signed on and up to scale that we can be running the show)
Focus on quality went away over a decade ago. This is what the business is at this point and has been for some time now. Shouldn’t be a surprise
Perhaps then the profession is getting what it deserves
Been feeling the same way OP. 18 years in and I feel that the quality of work has declined and I’m now more focused on my team and just helping them be successful. With the exception of a few clients, the majority don’t really seem to want to do anything really innovative and would rather spend time posturing ( while doing the same old type of work & expecting different results)
