The older I get, the more I prioritize job security. So for me, if the pay works and the team is great, I'm likely not going to jump ship. To stretch myself I've found ways to incorporate myself into special projects that will challenge me. I've gotten an MBA for fun. I'm currently getting a PMP certification. If I need some other outlet, I do things personally like learn a new skill, like crocheting. I'm the kind of person that gets bored easily, so the challenges fade easily and I can't move on every time I feel like that. Because I'd be getting a new job every 6 months 😂
When thinking about development, I'm ready for new challenges. Job security is key, but growth matters too.
I definitely relate to this. Sometimes I feel like I should be doing something… else? I don't know what that thing is, just something that I'm not doing. When I start to feel that way, I just start looking for jobs. Often it cures that sense of ennui because the act of looking for jobs is exhausting, lol.
If you have any plans of going back to school or taking any certifications, do it now.
Learning while you’re not being challenged at work is a huge opportunity.
Learn excel, AI, something higher up but still relevant to your job.
Let your leaders know how you’re feeling unchallenged.
Make sure your boss’s boss knows.
I was an admin assistant for many years, felt stuck and unchallenged.
I asked my immediate boss for work and received busy work instead of new and challenging work.
When she retired, I began working with her manager and learned there was a WHOLE OTHER WORLD OF WORK in my dept. I could’ve been doing.
If they see potential in you they could delegate tasks to you.
Yes, sometimes it’s for the same pay at first BUT you are in the learning phase and the next time your evaluation rolls around or you have a check in about the new tasks you could get a pay bump/position bump.
You could also ask: what steps could I be taking for a role change.
I would start exploring new options... When you’re good at your job and things feel “fine,” it’s easy to get stuck in the comfort loop. But if you already know you’ve stopped stretching? You’ve answered your question. You don’t have to quit tomorrow, but you should start mapping your next move now. Talk to someone in a role that scares you a little.
