How do you talk about money with friends who aren’t in finance without feeling like a jerk? I’m making $135k now and working 11-hour days, but anytime I mention being tired or stressed, someone makes a comment like, “Well, must be nice with that salary.” I get that I’m privileged, and I’m not trying to complain, but the work is real, and so is the pressure. It’s made me want to shut down instead of share. How do you explain finance comp without sounding like an a**hole?

I never talk about money with friends and family. It’s just an awkward conversation to have for both sides. There was one time one of my older cousins asked me about how much I make, it caught me by surprise and I just said I do ok and laughed it off.

I've never complained about my work with family or friends. I accept that I'm somewhat lucky to have the job I have, and I think griping about being tired or stressed would be poor form. There are people working much harder than I do who make a lot less, and I never forget that.

I would just encourage you not to bring it up with them. People who aren't in the industry just don't understand the stress and pressure that going into it. And in some ways, they are right, the money does make it worth it or we wouldn't do it.

How did they know what your salary is?

Why do firms fire people with low but still profitable hours? I am in my first full year on track for pretty low hours (~1500) but the actual realized fees (after writedowns) are still double my yearly salary. Is it because firms know they could replace someone like me with an equivalent attorney who would bill more?

Hey all!
I’m wondering if anyone is interested to consider / explore making a referral. I’m an associate (project manager) at Oliver Wyman in London on our private capital team (leading DDs). Previously worked at a PE fund and for a long time as a development economist in sub Saharan Africa. Degrees from UChicago and LBS. Based in London.

I mainly want to impress that I am not going to embarrass you as a referral.

Additional Posts in Salaries in Finance

I am a registered sales assistant which means I have my series 7. I also have the 63 and my Life & Health license. I was a financial advisor but the role is commission only so I decided to take a role as an assistant for some time to learn etc. I really like my role, but I only make 32k a year and after taxes I only take home about 25k. I have a gut feeling that I’m not being paid market value but it’s tough to find comparable salaries. Do you think $15.38/hr is a fair wage in this case?

Currently a Wealth Advisor for Citi but I honestly hate it here with a passion it’s the worst company I’ve ever worked for in my life and I’ve been in Wealth Management in the banking channel for over a decade. Series 7, Series 63, Life, CFP, ChFC, and soon to have my MBA with a focus in Mergers & Acquisitions. I’m look to enter another area of Finance at this point instead of starting over somewhere else from scratch, but not sure what direction to go. Interested in Investment Banking or M&A.

Curious what’s a fair salary in MA? Was just told that there is likely not going to be a chance for a raise during my upcoming performance review due to my salary already being “above average for the industry” based on my employer’s questionable research. I’ve been with the company 8.5 years & am the only one in my role, which they can’t operate without. I execute tasks from two investment advisors and two financial planners - they make the decisions of what should happen & I make it happen.
