Partners - what was the most stressful year of your career? The year before you made partner? Your first year of partnership? The year(s) you or your partner gave birth?

For context, I’m a female senior associate trying to figure out if my life is ever going to get better or if it only gets worse from here.

All of the above. The year before I made it was such a grind. My first year as a partner was basically like being a junior associate all over. The year we had a baby was overwhelming and made me wonder if I even wanted to go back to work. OP, it may be a rough few years ahead but if you want to make partner, you can do it. Or if you decide this isn’t for you, that’s fine, too. My advice is always to keep going and don’t quit until you’re quitting because you may find that you can push through even if it feels impossible in the moment.

Year before I made partner was also the year my first kid was born. Nothing was ever that hard again.

My superiors are asking me to contact CEOs of debtors to chase payments. We’re in B2B and payments are usually 30 days or more. I think it’s dumb, will hurt the relationship and I also don’t want to ruin my reputation. Thoughts?

I’ve suffered from workaholism for a long time. Thanks to a lot of great self help books and therapy, I’m no longer putting work on a pedestal and I’m spending a lot more time on self care and my marriage. But, unfortunately, I am now getting withdrawals, because my body is used to the daily adrenaline of throwing myself into work. It’s this terrible feeling of like anguish/unease in my gut, but I don’t have anything I’m worried about- it’s like my body wants to find something to worry about.

Any other first years out there worry that this virtual environment just won’t be able to teach them? I worry I’m not getting the same “plugged in” experience when I can’t knock on a door or walk into an office. Doesn’t help that my anxiety is heightened by feeling so isolated. The learning curve is high enough as is and I’m not sure I’ll ever learn enough virtually to be useful in big law...am I alone?!?

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

I am a sixth-year associate overseeing a second year. They are an exceptionally good associate. I am honestly shocked at the work product I receive and the way they go above and beyond. I know they’re busy, but I would like to address this in a positive way. Any suggestions?
