How has your pay evolved over time? I started around $65K and now hover near $110K, and I’m curious what helped others move beyond that stage into higher ranges.

Promotions made the biggest difference for me to get into a higher pay band. Starting at a smaller company and getting a lot of different experiences and then moving to a larger one also made a world of difference in pay.

This is a strong point. Promotions and broader exposure often make a bigger difference than tenure alone, especially when you’ve experienced both smaller and larger organizations. That combination tends to position people well for higher bands. Looking back, which move had the biggest impact on your compensation trajectory?

I started off on £16.5k and worked my way up over 10 years to £30k I then moved to a new job that wereoffering £28k but I negotiated to £30k. Hoping to start creeping up again in my new place.

That’s a great example of how consistency and negotiation both play a role in long-term pay growth. Even when a move looks lateral on paper, it can open doors for future increases once you settle in and prove value. In your experience so far, what do you think will matter most in helping your salary start climbing again in this new role?

Began my career in Learning & Development at the bottom of the pay range, something like $45k. Making many hundreds of thousands of dollars a year now including salary, bonus and annual stock grants. This is over a 25 year time frame -- slow and steady climb uphill.

I definitely recommend taking on more responsibility followed by promotions (in that order, not the reverse). Show the company you can do more, and then begin applying internally for more senior positions when they become available. If that doesn't work, jump ship and take a more senior role elsewhere. But, you have to be able to prove you can actually do a role at a more senior level, which is why I recommend taking on more responsibility FIRST because then you have talking points.

That’s a powerful example of long-term progression. A 25-year climb with increasing scope, impact, and ownership really shows how comp can follow capability over time. I also like your point about earning the promotion before the title , building proof first makes the move defensible, whether internally or externally.

In your experience, what specific responsibilities or stretch projects made the biggest difference in accelerating that upward shift in pay? Thanks for your feedback

I have worked in marketing for about 6-7 years. First few years were in social media management. My goal is to work at a big tech company.

I’ve heard mixed results about the ROI of earning an MBA. My near future goal is to move into a Marketing Director (or senior manager) role.

1) How much does Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. value MBAs in the hiring process?

2) Anyone currently working at the companies above with only a BBA?

Current situation: Marketing Manager, 90k, NYC.
