Dry clean suits every 6 months. Buy one suit with two trousers because trousers wear fast first. Buy stretch fabric if made to measure. Have a wardrobe of 5 - 7 suits outfits: 2 grey, 2 blue, 1 glen plaid, 1 charcoal, 1 black pinstripe. If you do this... your suits will last 5-6 years, at least.
I’d modify the 8 suits to: 2 solid navy (most versatile) ideally one summer and one winter suit, navy stripe (not bold), blue solid, charcoal grey, charcoal grey variation (striped or plaid), light grey, solid black for formal occasions (optional).
If you take care of them, mine last 2 yrs at least. You just have to remember to dry clean them once every two month and use other techniques like steam for the weekly freshness you want. My avg suit is 1400 though, so it’s also the type you buy.
It depends how many you have in your rotation. I have 6-8 suits that I rotate between at all times and they last 2-3 years.
BA1 - I agree with everything you said. You said everything else I would have said!
I have always two suits - Charcoal and Navy - both from suit supply , dry clean 3 times a year- they last approx 3 years. yes I do have extra wool pants.
A protip for people who wear suits often but dont have a lot of suits: buy 2 pairs of the suit pants. It is generally considered a fashion faux pas to wear a formal suit without the matching pants, and once that particular suit is not produced, you will not be able to perfectly match the color.
Maybe 2 years. I haven’t found that traveling is very kind to my suits...
I can't ever imagine traveling with more than 2 suits. Usually just one suit plus one sport coat though.
One thing I think helps is quality luggage or at least transportation method that minimizes you having to put heat on your suit to get wrinkles out. I haven’t found a good way to do this yet...
Wear the colors you like folks
