What do you do when you need a sub? What kinds of plans work best for subs in the Spanish classroom? I have needed subs lately and have found it hard to plan lessons that aren’t just busy work.

Culture— review—conjugation practice, but at the end of the day it depends on if your sub wants to work your plans or if they believe they can’t because they “don’t know Spanish!”
I have gone through detailed directions, made sample copies and nothing gets done. Now I leave the week’s work on Google Classroom with youtube video explaining what we are working on or with enrichment activities. At the end of the day, no one is going to take your place, so lock down your valuables( so kids don’t get in it) and plan a simple day!

Got this little gem as part of a bundle for my classroom. Absolutely delightful! Set in 1946 in Chicago, Cline-Ransome does a magical job of describing how a young boy struggles with death, moving, bullying, and learning of his own heritage. I can’t wait to share this with my students!

Anyone have advice for talking to teachers in your school that are upset with you?
My 4th grade class didn’t show up today because the teachers are upset that student behaviors that are an issue in music are carrying over to their classroom. I understand their frustration, but nothing was communicated with me. I even thought things were going better this week.

How do you collect data on classrooms?

Did anyone else adopt the new Florida Wonders curriculum? We just adopted it this school year, and I teach 4th grade. My team and I have not found a good flow, schedule, or whatever you want to call it. We feel like it teaches too many skills in one lesson, and we are not able to truly teach anything “deep” enough for students to master. Does anyone have any insight? What do you do? Do you like the curriculum? Why or why not? Would you be willing to share what you do weekly/daily? Thanks!

High school special class (self-contained) teachers: What do you use for planning? I’ve always been an inclusive teacher, so I followed the plan book of my co-teacher. I can’t even decide if I should go digital or paper-based let alone make a final decision! I’ll be teaching 9-11th grade math and 11th grade science. The 11th grade classes I can very much do whatever I (or the student) want/need…there isn’t a set curriculum

- Comp: 270k aed/year + 5% bonus

Additional Posts in Secondary Spanish Teachers

Has anyone here heard of/used/purchased the somos curriculum? I've been considering for awhile. I dont think my school will pay for it and also my department doesn't want it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

With the no homework movement in schools I'm really torn. I preach repetitive input and practice to help not only learn but retain the language. How do you get your Ss get the reps without homework?

Any ideas for discouraging students from using Google translate, or like services? I tell students they need to rely on their brains, after all it is the original computer. Ask “What would they do if they have no signal, in a foreign country and are lost?” They continue to use it. Other teachers in my department don’t see it as an issue...any helpful suggestions are welcome.

Hi everyone. My high school is going to be adapting a hybrid model at the start of the school year. I plan to take a digital approach to everything. I have plenty of activities from the past that involve interaction and conversation in the target language, but I was wondering if anyone has some great digital or distance learning activities or ideas to share?

How do you handle a class who refuses to do homework? It is a lower level class (I.e. not honors) but they are capable, but so apathetic. On a good day 40-50% of kids will do it .. I’m at a loss.

In the hallway having a conversation in Spanish with another Spanish teacher, a staff member shouts out to us, “speak English, this is America.” I stopped and asked her “really?” She said “I don’t understand it,” to which I said, “we weren’t talking to you, you don’t need to understand.” To make it worse, this is the second time she has said this to me. What could I say next time so she never tells me this again? I heard she has told other kids this too, we have a very high ESL population…

Have you seen the #teachersinmay it’s so funny!

Any suggestions on appropriate Spanish movies to show in my Spanish 4 class with video/lesson plan? We have two weeks left with seniors and I got through my curriculum
