I've been in the IT industry for over 30 years. I spent time as a programmer, consultant, and network engineer. I've even been in senior management a couple of times.
I'm currently doing Tier 2 support and it's generally pretty chill unless there is a major product update going down. Part of me is entertaining the thought of transitioning into another type of role, but I figure I will end up as the team leader.
I fully expect to stay in the IT field unless I snap and become a blacksmith or something.
Unfortunately couldn't find work as actual IT support regardless of my qualifications, so I'm currently sitting in a Tier 1 customer service role, providing unwritten IT support for the rest of the service team, so I guess take my comment with a grain of salt:
I feel I'd be much happier doing IT support with responsibilities that actually utilize the knowledge I have. I like being challenged, and I enjoy the IT field.
I'm curious what IT Support folks here have to see. Mostly commenting to try to bring some semblance of life to this bowl.
I have been in the industry for 18 years now. I started out as a customer tech support for 1 year then internal support in 2 companies for 3 years then back to customer support tier 3 as I became specialised in certain product lines. I stayed with the same company for 3.5 years but two different companies. Then took out my first management job in internal support. I have left it in one year and made a decision not to go back to internal support any more. I have worked in 4 different companies after that with an average span on 3 years different management level. I am now a director and have been for the past 3.5 years. My advice is to start in internal support tier 1 or 2 till you find your passion and specialise to move to tier 3. Then move out of internal support. Internal support is prone to cuts and lack of investment. Customer support however especially in SaaS model is essential to company survival. You won't be ranked as high as PS or Customer Success but not far off. Hope this helps.
I’m at a MSP and it’s been a ride. I’ve been in the industry for 7.5 years and first couple of jobs were kinda awful but my current company is fantastic and Ive been happy since I started here.
